PDO Threadlift, Not Your Average Needlework

Updated: Mar 28, 2023

You want to put a needle and thread through where?

PDO Threads are designed to lift the skin up to tighten sagginess and wrinkles. They are inserted in the treatment area, brows/cheeks/jowls/upper neck, to reverse signs of aging and initiate collagen production. Let’s be clear, these aren’t normal threads that you would use for sewing. In fact, threading has been used for a long time to help suture incisions and gynecological disorders after medical procedures.

There are three types of sutures that can be used in a thread lift procedure:

  1. Polylactic Acid (PLA)

  2. Polycaprolactone (PCA)

  3. Polydioxanone (PDO)

At Prestige Beauty Bar, PDO Threads are used because their monofilament (polyester, synthetic) configuration makes it easier to pass through the tissues of your skin with minimal irritability and risk of infection. Of the three types, PDO Threads have been used the longest (since 1982) to suture medical wounds. These threads are strong and absorbable by the body, making your thread lift treatment non-invasive and relatively painless.

No matter what medical aesthetic treatment you choose, be sure to book with a qualified professional; a PDO Thread lift is no different. The threading isn’t terribly difficult or complicated but the medical practitioner must be sure they’re in the right tissue plane and not too superficial. Working with a cannula makes this treatment easier. It can be tricky cutting the sutures and getting as close to the skin as possible to ensure they don’t stick out or are visible.

Sterility is of highest importance so make sure where you choose to make an appointment practices impeccable cleanliness.

Will a PDO Thread lift hurt?

Pain is relative but, in general, during the procedure you will feel little to no pain. Sandra, a Registered Nurse and the Founder of Prestige Beauty Bar Inc., uses a local anesthetic (injectable lidocaine) to numb the area. Once completed, you can leave and resume most of your normal daily activities. It is suggested to avoid:

  • drinking alcohol for at least 24 hours

  • sleeping on your stomach

  • wearing makeup for at least 24 hours

  • getting a facial or face massage

  • making dramatic facial expressions

  • strenuous movements or activities like working out for a few days.

You want to allow the area to heal as it did experience trauma.

Minor bruising and swelling are normal so taking Tylenol, DO NOT take Advil, to relieve the discomfort is ok along with icing the treated area. Results could start to be visible immediately after your procedure and then they will continue to take shape within 3 to 4 weeks. Over the next few months, your body will start to produce that age-defying collagen, tightening and lifting your skin. Peak results will be most visible around the 6-month mark and could last for up to 2 years.

PDO Thread lifts can be repeated if a client is happy with their results. Many clients are drawn to this treatment due to its non-invasiveness and minimal downtime. These threads are great for your jawline, near the eyebrows, cheeks, and in the upper neck. Smoothing the skin and taking years off of your appearance.

Who would’ve thought that threads could do so much for your face?! Just make sure it’s a Medical Professional doing the threadwork on your skin.
