Prevention Is The Name Of The Game

Updated: Nov 17, 2022

When it comes to beauty, all healthcare really, prevention is your best weapon against aging. Sure as we get older our skin changes but often we are the ones doing the damage; be honest, how often did you put on sunscreen when you were in your teens or early twenties?

The good news is that it’s not too late to start caring for your skin properly! Dermaplaning can help do just that by removing vellus hair and dead skin.

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a procedure that uses a scalpel to exfoliate the skin. By shaving off your peach fuzz, medically known as vellus hair, your skin will look healthier and smoother all while reducing the appearance of imperfections. It is minimally invasive however you can experience some redness, tenderness, or slight swelling of the skin. Generally this subsides in a day or two leaving your skin glowing and more radiant.

Dermaplaning helps treat:

  • Minor acne scarring

  • Wrinkles

  • Fine lines

  • Dull skin

Not only does dermaplaning help your skin look smoother, it can also help with hyperpigmentation and lessen wrinkles. By regularly including this in your beauty regime you can help manage uneven skin tone and even reduce acne scars. It is a great compliment to having a chemical peel done as you will then get much deeper exfoliation.

How long does dermaplaning last?

At approximately four weeks the benefits of dermaplaning start to wane so generally you should get treatment every four to six weeks. Most importantly, your skin needs time to heal between treatments so be sure to check with your practitioner before setting your next appointment.

Before your dermaplaning treatment, be sure to avoid:

  • Using active ingredients for one week

  • Using any exfoliating products two weeks

  • Direct sun exposure for a week

After your appointment it is important to stay out of, or protected from, the sun until your skin returns to its natural color. It is also helpful to avoid scrubs or exfoliators for at least a week and any extreme heat on your skin. Serums and moisturizers can certainly help soothe your skin and definitely be sure to use sunscreen.

Dermaplaning easily compliments almost any skincare routine and is a great way to maintain and prevent future skin discoloration and wrinkling.
